PAINTER'S PROFILE

Joaquim Pancho was born in Angola in 1970, in the city of Luanda, and came to Portugal with his parents at the age of 5 due to the civil war in that country.

They settled in Grândola, in the Alentejo region, where his parents ran a restaurant in partnership with his uncle for 10 years. There, surrounded by the tranquil rhythm of the region, he spent most of his childhood.

During this period, his passion for drawing emerged, starting by copying small illustrations from comics, quickly moving on to sketching everything he saw, a result of the walks he regularly took through the hills and plains of Alentejo, whose shapes, light, and color fueled his imagination.

After that time, his parents moved to the city of Aveiro, where he completed the 12th grade, joining the Portuguese Air Force as a volunteer for four years, after which he decided to apply for the Public Security Police Officer training course in 1995, completing 30 years of effective service in that security force, but never losing his desire to deepen his artistic knowledge, which led him to take classes at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Aveiro, contributing to the increase of his knowledge and improvement of his painting technique, whether watercolor or oil, increasingly awakening his interest in these two mediums, so different from each other.

But, being self-taught, much of his learning also comes from his research in books and videos, as well as from visiting art museums and exhibitions, where he exchanges ideas with other artists, in order to further deepen his knowledge.

All his painting is inspired by 19th-century Impressionism. XIX, taking as reference the work of Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Renoir, among other masters of that artistic movement, also taking an interest in animal painting and physiognomy, still lifes and sometimes figurative painting, this with regard to oil.

As for watercolor, he is guided by the work of watercolorists such as Joseph Zbukvic (master of masters), Alvaro Castagnet, Herman Pekel and Amanda Hyatt.

Currently he lives in Bicesse, municipality of Alcabideche, with his wife and children, where he works in his studio whenever he has the opportunity, in oils and watercolors, also producing small commissions of portraits in charcoal and oil.

He paints what he sees and what he feels, constantly seeking to capture the beauty, light and harmony of the landscape.

In 2023, his work was featured in ART4ANY magazine nº16, September 2023 edition, with illustrations of some of his works.

In 2025, his work was mentioned again in the book "100 Artists of Europe," published by Culturale Lab.

On December 5, 2025, he received a certificate of merit at the Artists of Europe 2025 event, held at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista di Venezia in Venice, organized by PitturiAmo.

On March 13, 2026, he received a second certificate of merit at the Brera 26 Prize event, held in Milan, organized by PitturiAmo.

Thus, he invites all visitors to become familiar with the places that attract our admiration for their beauty and diversity, embarking on a journey through color and light, awakening our deepest emotions and sensitivities.
